The word "geometry" comes from the Greek: geo - "earth", and metria - "measurement". A mathematician who works in the field of geometry is called a geometer.

Sculpture background

Geometric Growth is one of Wellington's oldest modern sculptures.

It was originally sited at the corner of Victoria and Mercer streets, but was removed in 1989 to make way for the Civic Square development. It was seriously damaged during the move and lay in storage until it was reinstalled in its currently location in 2006.

Guy Ngan was born in Wellington in 1926, to Chinese parents, and refers to himself "Pacific Chinese". Ngan was director of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts from 1976 to 1986.
