Sculpture background

"Seismic is a direct reaction to the site. Each disc is an interpretation of events occurring during an earthquake. The discs are thrown about the site to evoke a sense of randomness. Seismic is intended to be a sculpture you pass through and perhaps contemplate the precarious nature of our environment along the way."

Louise Purvis

The discs are made out of Italian Carrara marble. Each disc measures 1.8m in diameter and weighs 3.5 tonne

Topographical Map Section is a relief map with deep slots for the north-south and east-west gridlines. Seismic shock, lying almost flat, represents an earthquake in its shockwave. Disrupt, reminds us of the disruptive effects of quakes with its irregularly centred rings. Split indicates how, as tectonic plates move against each other, the surface of the earth is changed by earthquakes.
