Sculpture background

This over-sized head looks as though it is the last remaining piece of a huge ancient statue of a Roman emperor. Intentionally distorted perspective makes Grand Head look naturalistic from only some angles.

This piece was commissioned under the Wellington City Council's Art Bonus scheme. This scheme has been criticised for commissioning works in the final stages of the development process and not allowing artists appropriate time to engage with the spaces where the sculptures were to be located.

Grand Head has been called a prime example of this, as it is hidden by trees and located in a poor position for pedestrians to view.
