Civic Square tour (40 mins)

Civic Square was designed by architect Ian Athfield and completed in 1991.

Before Civic Square, there was no formal civic space in the capital.

The buildings around civic square are the Wellington City Library, the Wellington Town Hall, the City Gallery Wellington, Capital E (containing the National Theatre for Children), the Wellington City Council, and the Michael Fowler Centre.

The works of art here are used to incorporate 'expressions of tikanga and as reflections on place embracing multiple viewpoints' (Harper & Lister, 2007, p. 65).
